the UK under BSF - covers a total of 18 education and community
projects, including 13 new schools catering for almost 10,000
students across ten sites.
Capita Symonds - part of the Catalyst Lend Lease consortium
which is delivering the programme - is providing educational,
partnering, architectural and engineering services on a number of
the projects together with a number of other services such as
landscape design, acoustics, fire and disability access
consultancy.
First Phase
Nelson: The £29m Pendle Vale College and Pendle
Vale High School site in Nelson brings together two schools under
one roof. The sloping site has been used to create a new local
landmark with a building that rises in tiers to four storeys and is
capped by a sweeping roofline. Sports pitches and indoor sports
resources are all built to Sports England standards to support the
school's aims to achieve specialist sports college status. The
college is co located with Pendle Community High School and College
which provides places for a further 90 students aged 11-19 with a
range of special needs.
Burnley: The £31m Burnley Campus contains
schools for both sixth form and primary students; a 50-place
nursery and children's centre; a library and faith centre;
all-weather sports pitches; fitness centre; climbing wall; sports
hall; and hydrotherapy pool.
Padiham: The £20m Shuttleworth College in
Padiham features an entrance area dominated by a dramatic
floor-to-ceiling atrium that echoes the designs of modern office
buildings. Facilities include a dance studio, sports hall, fitness
room, tennis courts, all weather sports pitches, a café and faith
centre.
Second Phase

Unity College: This £26m college benefits from
being located in impressive picturesque surroundings in Townley
Park, Burnley. The college is designed to accommodate 1050 students
and 150 staff over two floors with a total gross internal floor
area of approximately 10,700 sq m.
The building was designed to embrace Unity College’s performing
arts specialism by providing a commercial style theatre, green
room, performance changing facilities, dance and drama studios,
prop storage, ticket office and external performance area. The
building was also designed around core subjects such as
mathematics, english, humanities, art, science, modern foreign
languages, music and Information technology.
Sir John Thursby: Constructed on the site of
the Walshaw Girls School, this new 1050 place school replaces the
previous girls school, combining it with the all boys Barden High
School. The transition from single sex schools was part of the
radical education reforms implemented by Lancashire County Council
as part of its overall education shake up. Another bold move was
the co-location of Ridgewood Special School onto the same site.
This 90 place community high school caters for students aged
between 11 and 19, with a range of needs from moderate learning
difficulties through to those with profound and multiple learning
difficulties.
Marsden Heights: Located in Brierfield, Nelson,
this £25m new build scheme accommodates 1050 students over four
floors with a total area of 10,660 sq m. The project was
constructed in a steel frame with retaining structures to suit the
site’s topography
Third Phase
Accrington Academy: This £16.2m project
comprises a new build extension which provides a bold new frontage
to the academy along with significant works to the existing
buildings as well as roofing over two courtyards.
The academy – which specialises in sports and maths - caters for
900 11-16 year old students, including a 250-place sixth form. It
also features new sports pitches and hard play areas to Sport
England guidelines as well as new sports facilities such as a
fitness suite, activity studio and increased changing
provision.
BTEC Media suites and BTEC Health & Social Care facilities
further enhance the school’s vocational curriculum while other
works include new dining and flexible learning facilities, a new
assembly hall and increased drama facilities.

Blessed Trinity RC College: Specialising in
sports and humanities, this £17m school, which is being completed
on a fast track programme, is targeting a BREEAM rating of ‘Very
Good’ by generating 20% of its energy needs via renewable energy
technologies such as biomass boilers, wind turbines and natural
ventilation.
Hameldon College: This new 1050 secondary
school was delivered to a construction budget of no more than £1800
per sq m. Specialising in business and enterprise as well as
science, the college was formed from the merger of Habergham High
School and Ivy Bank Business and Enterprise College.
Fulwood Academy: Due for completion in autumn
2012, the new £25m Fulwood Academy in Preston will cater for 1200
pupils and is being sponsored by Carphone Warehouse co-founder
Charles Dunstone. The proposed plans comprise a major rebuild and
substantial refurbishment of the existing school - Fulwood High
School and Arts College – which will showcase the academy’s digital
media specialism.

The Rose BESD (Behavioural, Emotional and Social
Difficulties) Unit: This bespoke circa £7m new build unit
provides accommodation for 40 of the Borough of Burnley’s most
challenged pupils - those with behavioural, emotional and social
difficulties.
