Our history

Although we’re a relatively young company, Capita Symonds only launched in June 2004, our history stretches back much further in the heritage of the companies that have joined us through acquisition or partnerships over the years.

2010

  • Capita Symonds acquires commercial property management specialists NB Real Estate
  • Capita Symonds acquires leading healthcare consultancy Inventures Ltd

2009

  • Capita Symonds acquires engineering consultancy Multi-Tech Contracts Ltd
  • Capita Symonds acquires urban design consultancy AMA Associates
  • Capita Symonds acquires transport technology consultant MMB Associates
  • Capita Symonds signs a 15-year, £40m strategic partnership with Breckland Council to provide planning and building control services to the Council.

2008

  • Capita Symonds develops a 10-year strategic partnership with Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council delivering a wide range of property and highway services, valued at approximately £70m.
  • Capita Symonds forms Capita Glamorgan Consultancy joint venture with Bridgend, Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Councils in South Wales for the delivery of highways, transportation, associated environmental management, and other related services to the authorities and across Wales. The partnership will run for up to 15 years and is valued at around £75m.
  • Capita Symonds acquires Sheffield-based M&E consultancy Pearce Buckle
  • Capita Symonds acquires structural engineering consultancy NRM Bobrowski
  • Capita Symonds acquires leading land planning consultancy Lovejoy

2007

  • Jonathan Goring appointed as Managing Director of Capita Symonds.
  • Strategic partnerships with Southampton City Council and Swindon Borough Council brings 190 staff to Capita Symonds.
  • ‘Capita Architecture’ launches as consolidated brand for all architectural practices within Capita Symonds (Capita Percy Thomas, Capita Ruddle Wilkinson, Capita Norman & Dawbarn)

2006

  • Acquisition of architecture practices Church Lukas (Birmingham) and Ruddle Wilkinson Architects.
  • Capita Symonds named NCE/ACE Major Consultant of the Year 2006.

2005

  • Acquisitions of architecture practice Norman Dawbarn and transport planning consultancy Buchanan Consulting Engineers.
  • Urban Vision, a unique joint venture between Capita Symonds, support services company Morrison and Salford City Council launches to regenerate and revitalise the City of Salford.

2004

  • Acquisition of leading architectural practice Percy Thomas Architects - rebranded Capita Percy Thomas.
  • Capita acquires Symonds Group. Symonds is merged with Capita Property Consultancy to form a new company, Capita Symonds Ltd.

2002

  • Ground-breaking civils / engineering joint venture between Capita and four Welsh local authorities sees the launch of Capita Gwent Consultancy in Cwmbran, South Wales.

2001

Before 2000

1999

  • Symonds acquired by its management team.
  • Capita Property Services acquires MPM Adams and Edward Roscoe Associates.

1998

  • All Capita Group property companies come together to form a multidisciplinary division, Capita Property Services Ltd.
  • Symonds restructured and became known as Symonds Group Ltd incorporating

1997 - Capita Group acquires BWA and Tozer Gallagher.

1996 - Capita Group acquires Estatecare (formerly WHCSA, part of NHS Wales).

1995

  • Symonds acquires Travers Morgan - expanding into transport, engineering and environmental consultancy services.
  • Woolf becomes part of Symonds.

1994 - Capita Group acquires Beard Dove

1993 - Symonds acquired by Compagnie Générale des Eaux (Vivendi).

1992 - Capita Group acquires Estate Design Management.

1990 - Capita Group acquires JE Greatorex.

1987 - Capita Group launched following a management buyout from CIPFA backed by 3i, with 33 employees.

1984 - Capita formed within the Chartered Institute of Public Finance (CIFPA), with 2 employees.

1981 - Woolf incorporated.

1960 - Symonds established.
